About Us

In the Beginning:

Virginia Institute for Sports Medicine was founded in 2003, by Dr Patrick O'Connell, Dr Brick Campbell and Dr Peter Jacobson. These doctors are committed to excellence by pledging to provide the highest quality of healthcare possible in a setting that is personal, warm and centered around you as an individual. Our practice is proud to serve Virginia Beach and the surrounding communities.

Our board certified orthopedic surgeons and physicians can diagnose and treat diseases and injuries to bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and nerves. We specialize in the treatment of sports and work injuries, arthroscopy, fracture/trauma care, shoulder surgery, knee replacement, hip replacement, and foot and ankle care.

The Growing Years:

In 2006, Dr Joel Stewart joined the practice with a special interest in overuse injuries to the foot and ankle.

In 2009, Dr Stephen Miller joined the patient focused team with an emphasis on concussions, adolescent back pain and spondylolysis.

The area's demand for quality orthopaedic care has continued to grow dramatically. Continuing to be pro-active in meeting the patient's needs, the practice has added Certified Physician Assistants to work under direct supervision of the physicians and facilitate a timely team approach to comprehensive quality care. Phil Davis, Charles Bradshaw, and Paul Versage are each board certified Physicians Assistants with a focus in orthopedics.

2010 found the practice dramatically expanding their capacity by moving into a new, modern and more efficient facility. In that next year, the practice also started offering onsite Physical Therapy. Our highly skilled clinical team works closely with our providers to deliver seamless continuum of care for all of our patients. We pride ourselves in the unique relationships that we establish with each patient.

Where we're going:

While some patients problems care be treated nonoperatively, the Orthopedic surgeons at Virginia Institute for Sports Medicine are trained in the latest surgical techniques that can provide state of the art treatments for our patients.  Many of these techniques allow procedures to be performed by minimally invasive surgery, leading to shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries.

Because each patients needs are unique, our dedicated in-house physical therapy department works with the team of physicians and physicians assistants to provide a carefully customized program of rehabilitation.
